Philosophy
Refuge is something between foster care and supported accommodation. To achieve this Mick will be at the home very often and provide everything that is needed:
- we mean toilet rolls, washing powder, cleaning products, cooking oil, rice, bread….everything to be sure that our young people have what they need if they struggle to manage on limited income.
- we will also have regular trips out; things like the cinema, trips to London; football matches, village festivals, theatre, bowling and use of our canal boat.
- our desire is that our young people can see beyond the City and really experience the UK, and equally important to us is that people in the UK meet asylum seeking young people.
- we shall, for example, take part in car boot sales to raise money for the house to buy PlayStation, TV’s, speakers and games.
- Mick will cook for the young people once a week and we shall eat together (this evolved from the reality that many of our young people simply insist on cooking for others in the house
- The young people shall meet Mick’s family; Mick’s wife is a children's nurse, and DBS checked by Refuge, Mick’s children will benefit from knowing our young people and our young people may choose to watch his children in their football matches, and vice versa.
- Mick will hope the young people at Refuge will feel he is proud of them and their achievements
- The ‘Ali Award’, a cash amount, will be given out on 23rd August each year (the date we opened) to the young person who has most overcome hardship. (‘Ali’ was our first young person who came to us very distressed, at 3.30am

                                   Purpose
Refuge exists to meet the needs of those young people who arrive into the UK seeking asylum without an adult to provide care for them.
Mick Gregg is the Principal Worker for each young person, with staff on site when he is not at the home. Michael provides a key work role and will ensure that Pathway Plan tasks are completed, and work directly with any behaviour or additional needs to help the young person settle and achieve.
We expect that our young people will have additional needs originating from their experiences before having to leave their homes, from being separated from family, from what may have happened to them on their journey to the UK and from the uncertainty in being subject to asylum processes. We will be able to respond to any aspect of their life that may act as a barrier to them achieving. We also see that we may need to assist them in transition in the event that they are assessed to be adult or faced with a refusal to be granted asylum.
Support staff are like big brothers or sisters.
Our primary purpose is to keep young people safe, for them to feel supported and engaged in their planning and progress in the dual processes of being in care alongside the process of claiming asylum and ultimately to see them ready to move on to full and independent lives in the UK.
